GUWAHATI: Dr Sri Sri Pitambar Dev Goswami, Xatradhikar of SriSri Auniati Xatra of Majuli, has said that the Xatra Commisison, set up by the State Government to look into matters pertaining to xatra properties and encroachment thereupon, provides a golden opportunity to ascertain all relevant data regarding the matter.
The Xatradhikar said, "There is no proper data regarding the quantum of Xatra land which is under encroachment. Setting up of the Xatra Commission is a welcome move by the State Government because the commission is in a position to find out the exact magnitude of the encroachment problem." He urged the commission to visit as many xatras as possible, scrutinize land records and submit its report as soon as possible to the State Government. The Government will then have to evict all encroachers from xatra land, he said. The Xatridhikar said that the greater Assamese society will survive only if the xatras remain protected.
He expressed sorrow that Baghbar MLA Sherman Ali Ahmed is instigating people to encroach upon xatra land. All land belonging to the Barpeta Xatra must be protected from encroachers, he said. It may be mentioned that the State Government has asked the Xatra Commission to submit its report within one year. The commission is the first of its kind in Assam.
