Lat Mandal arrested for accepting bribe in Guwahati

The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption arrested a Lat Mandal for allegedly accepting a bribe.

GUWAHATI: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption arrested a Lat Mandal for allegedly accepting a bribe. The accused is identified as Achyut Das. He was arrested at the office of the Circle Officer, Ulubari, Guwahati Revenue Circle on Saturday. The Lat Mandal demanded a bribe of Rs 9,000 from the complainant for processing the mutation works. Later, the Lat Mandal reduced the amount of the bribe to Rs 8,000. In this regard, the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption received a complaint. According to sources, a trap was laid on Saturday by a team from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Assam, in the office of the Circle Officer. Achyut Das was caught red handed immediately after he accepted Rs. 5,000 as part of the demanded bribe from the complainant. The tainted bribe money has been recovered from his possession and has been seized accordingly, in the presence of independent witnesses.

During the body search of Das, an additional amount of Rs. 9,500 has been recovered from his pocket and has also been seized in the presence of independent witnesses. Finding sufficient evidence against the accused public servant, he has been arrested by the team of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption. In this connection, a case (65/2023 under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988) (as amended in 2018) has been registered at the ACB Police Station.
