Assam women highest in alcohol consumption in tion'

GUWAHATI, Sept 3: Assam stands fourth in liquor consumption in the country as a whole, but the females of the State are on the top position on this front, says a report from the WHO.

The Alcohol Free Assam Demand Committee (AFADC) on Sunday raised its demand for making the State free from alcohol. According to a report from the WHO, while every year 3 million of people die for drinking alcohol in the word, in India 15 persons die every day.

The committee said in a statement issued on Sunday, “Alcohol consumption is rising in Assam. As per WHO reports, Assam ranked in 4th position, 23.8% in India for drinking alcohol. Tinsukia district of the State is in 3rd position, 36.5% in all over India. Women of Assam have been ranked first in so far as alcohol consumption is concerned.”

Every year 55% of people die in India for drinking alcohol. Besides that, most of the emergency cases of accident are related to drunk driving. Around 25% people die due to mixing alcohol and driving.

In Assam country liquor and IMFL are sold openly as they have many takers.

In Assam 9.3% women use to drink whereas women in Rajasthan is in the lowest rank with 0.1%. 

Addressing the press conference in the city, AFADC president Pravin Das said, “Assam should be an alcohol-free state like Gujarat. We have visited many places. Even in galand alcohol is banned. Because of this people are suffering from many diseases, besides increase in accidents”.
