GUWAHATI, August 31: The new committee of the Axam Xatra Mahaxabha (AXM) led by Xatradhikar Jitendrath Pradhani took charge from the outgoing committee yesterday, at long last! Soon after taking charge, the new committee has chosen ‘freeing the over 700 bigha land of 32 xatras of the State encroached upon illegally’ in the State.

New AXM secretary general Kusum Kumar Mahanta said in a statement issued to the press: “Over 700 bighas of land of the 32 xatras in the State have been under illegal encroachment. Our emphasis will be on freeing the xatra land from the encroachers. Dispur should take steps towards that end.”

Mahanta said: “In order to make the AXM a coherent body, we have divided the area falling under AXM jurisdiction into six divisions -- Upper Assam, North Assam, East-Central Assam, West-Central Assam, South-Central Assam and Lower Assam. Each of the six divisions is to be looked into by a vice president each. The vice presidents will have to submit their report cards on works done in their respective divisions for the preservation and development of xatriya culture to the president and the secretary general of the Mahaxabha at executive meetings.”

Mahanta further said: “We’re also going to form 15 cells for smooth functioning of the Mahaxabha. In order to keep people and AXM members informed of our activities, we are going to publish a bulletin soon.”

The secretary general further said that the AXM is going to rope in women in the Mahaxabha. “So as to ensure women’s involvement in our movement, we are going to form a women’s body with the me and style -- Sati Radhika Mahila Tirtha.”
