CM stresses prevention of atrocities against SC &ST

GUWAHATI, March 21: Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal has asked State Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee constituted for implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 to look for proper implementation of the Act in the State.

Sonowal chaired the first meeting of the State Level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee constituted for implementation of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 at his conference hall at Jata Bhawan on Wednesday.

Though the instances of offenses against SC/ST community in the state are very less the committee must look for right implementation of the Act and awareness activities must be taken at the district level for making the people aware about it, the Chief Minister said. People belonging to all sections of society must be empowered to live a life of dignity and SC/ST community members must get their due respect, he said. He also called on the MLAs and public representatives belonging to SC/ST communities to communicate with the government if any incident of atrocity takes place anywhere and forums such as these would go long way in maintaining peace, trust and harmony in society. 

The Chief Minister also called for better coordition between the departments of Judiciary, Home, WPT & BC, Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police of all districts for exact implementation of the Act as envisaged. 

Minister of WPT & BC Department Pramila Rani Brahma, PHED Minister Rihan Daimary, Cultural Affairs Minister ba Kumar Doley, MP ba Sarania, Media Adviser to the Chief Minister Hrishikesh Goswami, several MLAs belonging to SC/ST communities, among others, were also present at the meeting.
