GUWAHATI, July 24: Officials from the GMDA, police and SSB today carried out an eviction drive at Sarabhatti Bishnu Rabha Road near the bank of the Bharalu. The house of Sushila Devi, well protected with a fence wall, was demolished today, but not without a commotion. The family has 18 members.
According to Sushila Devi, they are equipped with a stay order from the court, but the eviction team showed blithe disregard for the court order and went ahead with their demolition drive using a JCB bulldozer. However, GMDA development officer S Alam has something different to tell. She said that the land belongs to the State Water Resource Department, and their structure was evicted last year also. The husband of Sushila Devi is a driver in the State Health Department. According to sources, some local influential people took money from her with the promise of stopping the eviction drive.
