Dr. Amika Ray medical negligence case: Husband requests AMC to act against erring doctors

GUWAHATI, June 22: Not satisfied with the punishment against two doctors declared by the Delhi Medical Council in connection with Dr.  Amika Ray medical negligence case, Dr. Ray’s husband Dr Ankuran Dutta has requested the Assam Medical Council (AMC) to take necessary action against two erring doctors.
The verdict of the controversial Dr Amika Ray medical negligence case against two medical practitioners based in Delhi was declared on June 16 by the Delhi Medical Council. The statement of the verdict as declared by the Discipliry Committee of the Delhi Medical Council stated that the two doctors accused of medical negligence – Dr Chandan Kumar Deka bearing Delhi Medical Council Registration No. 24331 and Dr Abhijit Khaund bearing Delhi Medical Council Registration No.15761 – will be removed from the State Medical Register of the Delhi Medical Council.
Addressing the press at Guwahati Press Club today, Dr. Ankuran Dutta said that the verdict had been declared on the light of six observations of gross medical negligence on the part of the doctors. “They include not checking the medical history of asthma of Dr Ray by the doctors, absence of pre-assertive assessment of the patient as per the standard protocol including ultrasound to conform acute cholesystitis, absence of pre aesthetic check-up, aesthesia chart and preparation of patient as per the rules, delaying treatment of cardiac event for crucial eight hours and later refraining from taking the patient in Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) even though the primary reason for the transfer of the patient to Jaipur Golden Hospital was due to cardiac arrest and lastly lackadaisical attitude in conducting autopsy in the wake of such a major health deterioration at that time,” he said.
This verdict came as a relief to many who have been victim of medical negligence in the country restoring the faith in the Medical Council. However, Dr Ankuran Dutta said that he is not happy with the sentence awarded to the two doctors by the Council. He requested the Assam Medical Council to take necessary action against the two doctors as they were also registered with the Assam Medical Council.
Dr. Dutta did file an FIR at Delhi’s South Rohini police station against the doctors and the hospital on November 6, 2015. 
Dr. Amika Ray Memorial Trust, which was established in memory of Dr. Amika Ray who had more than 10 books, 30 research papers, 100 articles in tiol and intertiol platforms to her credit, has started a movement to create awareness regarding medical terrorism/negligence.
