DIMORIA, July 24: All PWD roads at Malaybari village in the Domiroa area in East Kamrup district are accident-prone.  And the local people blame it on the State PWD that did precious little to upkeep the roads. The residents of the area also do not want to give their clean chit to the local administration either.

Each and every road that leads the people of the village to all important installations or places is dilapidated because of negligence by the PWD and the local administration. Encroachment on either side of the roads there is one of the evils that have made life miserable there.

A number of shops have sprung up on either side of the PWD road linking the Malaybari public crematorium and the State Bank of India (SBI) at Malaybari via Lakhitari Tiniali. They have encroached upon the land illegally. They have even choked the drains on either side of the road with garbage, leading to severe water-logging in the area after every spell of rains. Because of the drains being choked with garbage and red soil, water overflows and inundates the road and makes it muddy with red soil. Since the road is filled with water and mud, vehicles plying over it make big craters on the road here and there. These craters look like deathtraps as they are prone to accidents. None using the road, a pedestrian or a vehicle user, is safe as the situation there may lead to accidents to all.

The conscious citizens of the area squarely blame it on the State PWD and the local administration for their negligence in the upkeep of the road. The local people said that they had informed the State PWD of the condition of the road many a time, but to no avail.  They said that they had moved the local circle officer several times on the plight of the choked drains on either side of the road. However, the local administration also failed to do anything tangible to rid the people of the village of the plight they have been under, Chandan Malakar, a local youth, said.  According to the youth, a culvert in the area has also been encroached upon by some people. They have choked the culvert with garbage, and that leads to water-logging in the area. He said that the local people have already informed State PWD Minister Parimal Shuklabaidya and Dispur MLA Atul Bora of the condition of the road and sought succour. They said that if the condition of the road is not reversed, the government will have to face the wreath of the people.
