English versions of Sankardeva's plays released

GUWAHATI Jan 21: The English versions of six plays of Srimanta Sankardeva, 'Playwright-Preacher Sankardeva: His Plays' written by Dayanda Pathak, was released by veteran jourlist Kak Sen Deka at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakhetra (SSK) today.

Releasing the book, Deka said, "Sankardeva was the pioneer of Assamese plays writing and was the prominent person, who had written every types literary forms in the Middle Age in Assam. Pathak has done a great job by translatting six plays of Sankardeva in English, for which the works of Sankardeva will be spread in entire the world."

Talking to the media about his work, Pathak said, "I have translated six plays of Sankardeva, 'Patni Praxad', 'Parijat Haran', 'Kaliyo Daman', 'Rukmini Haran', 'Keli Gopal' and 'Ram Bijoy', which was written in 1568 and the last play written by him. We all know very well about Sankardeva as religious persolity, but through this wiork, I am trying to show him as a dramatist, who started writing modern drama in the Middle Age in Assam, more before than Shakespeare and other dramatists of the world. I have tried to showcase Sankardeva in front of the world through his works and it was our privilege that the play 'Parijat Haran' was translated from English version to French already."

The programme was also attended by noted writer Lakshmindan Bora, novelist Phanindra Kumar Deb Choudhury and others.
