GUWAHATI, June 8:  Since when Himanta Biswa Sarma came to the election scerio in the Jalukbari LAC, the winner-to-be of the contest has always been obvious even before the elections. It has been no contest. So strong was Sarma that there was no contender in the Jalukbari LAC who could give him a close fight. However, this time around in 2016, Himanta is likely to fight a lady who may prove to be a dark horse.

Upasha Phukan, daughter of former State Home Minister and Assam Agitation leader Brighu Kumar Phukan, made it known today that she is going to fight the Assembly polls from Jalukbari constituency.

Brighu Kumar Phukan passed away on March 10, 2006, and since then Upasha has been nurturing the dream of entering politics so as to translate the incomplete dreams of her father into a reality. She is meeting the people of the constituency and taking their advice. “I’m going along with the people of Jalukbari constituency. I’m determined to fight money and muscle power in elections and corruption that have been the hallmark of Jalukbari constituency for the past few terms,” she said. Upasha said that she was ready to fight the elections from any party, barring the Congress and the AIUDF. “The BJP has contacted me, and if everything goes well, I’ll fight the Assembly polls on a BJP ticket from Jalukbari constituency,” she said.
