GUWAHATI, March 4: The Sadou Asom Goriya Yuva-Chatra Parishad (AAGYCP) has demanded of the government to make the Wakf Board lands in the city free from encroachment within two days, failing which the students’ body will boycott the Congress party in the coming Assembly election.
Speaking to the press in Guwahati Press Club today, AAGYCP general secretary Moinul Haque said: “There’re more than 120 bighas of Wakf Board land in the various parts of the city that have been encroached by some political leaders and traders who don’t pay any revenue against the lands. The Wakf Board, which should get more than Rs 10,000 crore revenue from its lands in the state, gets only Rs 1 or 2 lakh yearly. The lands under Wakf Board were meant for the development works of the indigenous Muslims in the state, but the government has included only East Bangal-origins Muslims as members of the Board like Nekbar Ali, Zakir Hussain, Rashid Kashimi, zneen Farooqui and others, for which the board could not function well. We, therefore, demand of the government to clear the encroachment immediately and take steps within two days, or we will boycott the Congress party in the coming election.”
