GUWAHATI, March 6: Holi was celebrated in Guwahati in a massive way, the main attraction being rain dance at Fancy Bazar and Uzan Bazar.

Over 7,000 people, including girls, were seen taking part in the rain dance at Fancy Bazar. The gathering was also not less at Uzan Bazar. This year, women and girls were seen taking to streets in large number to enjoy Holi in most of the areas in the city.  Though Holi started from the morning of March 5 in most of the areas in the city, those who celebrate Holi as a sacrosanct festival started it only after the burning of Holika in bonfires on the night of March 5. There were such bonfires at Fancy Bazar, Pan Bazar, Kedar Road, Athgaon, Paltan Bazar, Borbari, Dakshin Gaon, Maligaon, Kahilipara etc., areas in the city. While many communities were seen to burn bonfires for Holika dohon, there are some other communities that observed it as the birth anniversary of Sri Chaitanya Dev.

Holi, as is the case always, does not seem to be complete without accidents. According to GMCH and MMC sources, so far as many as 95 people injured in Holi were admitted for treatment. Accidents were reported from areas like Bharalumukh, Latasil, Paltan Bazar, Chatribari etc., places in the city. Two persons also died in motorcycle accidents.
