Semir on packaging of fresh & processed foods

Guwahati, Nov 24: In order to create awareness about the importance of packaging, the trends and technology in the packaging of processed foods and also to promote the export market with the use of innovative packaging design and development, standardization, etc., the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) will be organizing a semir on ‘Packaging of Fresh & Processed Foods’ on Friday at Hotel Brahmaputra Ashok, Guwahati.

Dr NC Saha, Director, IIP while addressing the mediapersons here today said, “There is a need to develop altertive packaging system for foods which would be easily acceptable to the market for various commodity items. The most promising of these require using the mathematical models capable of predicting the shelf life of the packaged product in its real conditions of use. If using conventiol methods, one has to first produce the actual packaging, store it in environmental conditions that simulate the real storage and distribution conditions and then test the quality of the packed product at regular intervals.”

Explaining in brief about the semir, S Bhattacharjee, Chairman of the Guwahati Centre of IIP said, “Our region has many upcoming entrepreneurs who are venturing into the food sector be it fresh or processed. There are also many who would like to venture in this sector but are uble to due to lack of proper knowledge on packaging. Therefore our semir is aimed at providing such micro, small and medium entrepreneurs of the region with proper knowledge and guidance on packaging.”

State Fince minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Ravi Capoor, Additiol Chief Secretary, Dept of Industries & Commerce will attend as guest speakers at the semir.
