GUWAHATI, July 14: The intake capacity of students for medical and engineering courses in the State has gone up to 1,544 and 4,500 respectively.
In a statement issued to the press today, Dispur claims that during 2000-01 the total medical and engineering seats available in the state were 755 and 510 respectively. This has invariably helped the student community in the state.
During the past 14 years the total numbers of medical colleges in the state has also gone up to 6 from 3. Moreover, works on the Assam Hill Medical College and Research Centre at Diphu is going on, and steps for 3 more medical Colleges in Kokrajhar, Dhubri and Lakhimpur have already been taken up. Number of universities in the State has also been increased from 5 in 2001 to 19 at present. Earlier the total student intake in Guwahati and Dibrugarh University along with the Assam Agriculture University was 3,774. This has increased to 9520 at present.
New curriculum in 14 Model School has started from January 1, 2015. Construction works on 12 model graduate colleges, one Science & Technology University, Science city and Bio-technology Park are going on.
Moreover, construction of model schools in 81 educatiolly backward development blocks in the state has been taken up. The total strength of engineering colleges in the state has also gone up from 3 to 17 now.
