UC Sarma gets medical education excellence award

GUWAHATI, Dec 15: Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute presented Award of Excellence in Medical Education & Research to Prof. Umesh Ch. Sarma, Vice Chancellor, Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences, Assam at a Semir in Oncology in the Auditorium of the Institute today.

Since the establishment of Medical University by the State government, Prof. Sarma worked relentlessly to promote medical education & research in this part of the country.  

Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute, Guwahati is affiliated under the University and conducts MD in Radiotherapy and M.Ch in Surgical Oncology in addition to various other academic courses.  

Incidence of cancer in Rural India is half of the incidence of Urban India.  In spite of this mortality due to cancer in Rural India is doubled that of Urban India.  This is largely due to the fact that most of the cancer treatment facilities in India are concentrated in metropolitan cities of the country.  Cancer treatment facilities in North Eastern India are very limited in spite of high incidence of cancer.

Dr Sandip Basu, Head of Academic Programme, Radiation Medicine Centre, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai delivered a guest lecture on “Current place of Nuclear Medicine Therapies in the Practice of Clinical Oncology.

The scientific session was chaired by Dr. B. C. Goswami, Director, 200 Bedded Cancer Hospital, Guwahati Medical College and Dr. Kalyanee Boruah, Professor, Department of Physics, Gauhati University.

Dr. U. C. Sarma in his acceptance speech highlighted the importance of medical research on common cancers of the North Eastern Region.  He appreciated various academic & research programme conducted by the Institute.
