AZARA, Dec 29: The stretch of tiol Highway 37 that passes through the Azara area on the outskirts of Guwahati is fitted with streetlights that are not meant to glow for the commoners. However, they do glow when VIPs or VVIPs have to visit the area or pass through it. Why not? It’s Assam! Everyone is not supposed to get the glow of streetlights here!
If anyone goes through the highway after dusk, he/she will experience the darkness at the very stretch where accidents do occur as often as not. The area was seen glowed at night for the first few months when streetlights were fitted there. It’s a common scene in Assam that once streetlights are fitted on any streets and areas, they are not meant to be replaced with new ones when they go out of order unless there is anything like visit of the area by VIPs, VVIPs or when the election is near. The streetlights are out of order now. They do not glow. If anybody goes to the area after dusk now he/she will not get any vestige of the fact that the street was once glowed with streetlights, other than the light posts.
