The Assamese New Year of 2023 will always remain significant in that it was on the eve of Rongali Bihu that the traditional Assamese Bihu dance performance found a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by virtue of having the highest number of performers in a single venue. It is no joke to organize over 11,000 performers – female dancers, male drummers, and other musicians—from across the state and ensure that they perform in unison in order to place Bihu in the global arena. While creating a world record is significant, what is equally, if not more, important is what the gains will be for Assam in the coming days from this record. First and foremost, this record-breaking feat, covered so widely by the media, has generated tremendous awareness about Assam’s biggest festival all over the world. The publicity blitzkrieg that the government of Assam had mounted in the national capital as a run-up to the grand event had also caught the attention of the common people as well as the global media and created the desired impact. The curiosity the event has triggered off in the minds of millions of people across the globe has also, for the first time in three or four decades, painted a new and positive image of Assam. Steeped in insurgency, militancy, lawlessness, and bandhs for decades, Assam has, through this mega event, also assertively established the fact that things have drastically changed in recent times. Having also served as a tremendous image-building exercise, the Bihu world record should now work towards accruing economic benefits for Assam. If a proper roadmap can be drawn and implemented, Assam will definitely be able to capitalise on its new image by increasing manifold tourist inflows to the state in the coming years. For that, however, the tourism sector itself will require a massive overhaul, especially on the human resources front. Simultaneously, the record Bihu feat should also be able to provide a huge fillip to the traditional muga and paat silk industries of Assam. This should happen at three levels: while the domestic sale of muga and paat has already received a big boost in the run-up to the world record event, now is the most opportune time to draw the attention of national and international customers towards the two traditional silks of Assam. The biggest takeaway from the record-breaking Bihu performance, however, is the overall sense of pride that has been created for Bihu in general and towards indigenous culture and tradition in particular. No wonder Bhupen Hazarika had said, Bohag is not just a season or month; it is the lifeline of the Assamese people!
