Even as governments and international bodies continue to work on adopting newer strategies to tackle climate change, the role of common people has also increased significantly in recent times to contribute towards fighting climate change through a variety of actions. These include reducing energy consumption, adopting sustainable transportation, and making conscious food choices. These actions, while seemingly small, can collectively create a substantial positive impact when practised widely. Though it may appear for many to be too insignificant, the fact remains that certain simple steps, like switching over to LED bulbs and energy-efficient appliances like refrigerators and washing machines, turning off lights and appliances when not in use, turning to renewable energy sources like solar panels, using public transport instead of individual cars, cycling, or walking, etc., can make a huge difference. It is like that poem written long ago by Julia Carney, which spoke of how “little drops of water and little drops of sand make the mighty ocean and the pleasant land.” Small, seemingly insignificant actions by 140 crore individuals of our country can definitely bring about very significant changes for good. While some people may not believe it, changing the diet and food habits by embracing plant-based meals, eating less meat and dairy, and reducing food waste can significantly reduce your carbon footprint. Equally important is for every educated person to engage in climate action by staying informed and sharing information with others about climate change, its impacts, and how every individual can contribute to tackling it.
