The Department of School Education on Saturday issued orders for a formal dress code for teachers in schools in Assam, in the process putting a ban on all kinds of casual or informal dresses, including T-shirts and jeans. This is a very significant move, considering the fact that a section of teachers have been found to be in the habit of wearing dresses of their choice that do not appear to be decent to the public at large. As has been reported, the School Education Department has stated that since a teacher is expected to be an example of decency, especially while discharging duty, it has become necessary to follow a dress code that should reflect a sense of decorum, decency, professionalism, and seriousness of purpose at the workplace. Keeping this in mind, the department has prescribed a dress code for teachers at all educational institutions. Accordingly, while male teachers should attend their duties in “appropriate formal attire” only—formal shirt-trousers and not any casual attire such as T-shirts, jeans, etc.—female teachers have been asked to attend their duties in “decent” dresses like mekhela-chador, sari, and/or salwar suit and not any casual attire such as a T-shirt, jeans, leggings, etc. It is also important to note that the department has asked all teachers, male or female, to wear clean, modest, and decent clothes in sober colours that should not look flashy. The department has also strictly prohibited casual and party apparel, and a stern warning has also been issued saying any deviation from this may invite disciplinary action as per rules. The introduction of a ‘decent’ dress code will definitely help bring some kind of uniformity among teachers, apart from instilling a sense of greater discipline on a school campus. While several private schools across the state have already introduced dress codes for their teachers, several schools have also introduced uniforms for their teachers, regardless of whether they are male or female. There should be no hindrance to extending the dress code to teachers in colleges, universities, and other educational institutions.
