The election result of the 60-member Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has flagged off several issues. The BJP alone has won 52 of the 60 seats while its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) has bagged six. But more interesting is the fact that while newcomers Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Asom Jatiya Parishad (AJP) have won one seat each, the Congress party has drawn a huge blank. Though a large section of the citizens – close to 47 per cent – did not turn up to vote, the BJP-AGP combine has done exceptionally well. This proves that the citizens who cast their votes opted overwhelmingly for the ruling alliance. There is no denying the fact that the ruling alliance enjoys more confidence and support from the citizens. The citizens have seen the overall performance of the Himanta Biswa Sarma government in the past year. Piped drinking water supply continues to remain the biggest issue in Guwahati. Drainage, roads, sanitation and other civic amenities too continue to lack. Despite that, the ruling alliance has won in a big manner. Moreover, while the BJP-AGP-UPPL support base remained largely intact, that of the Congress further dwindled, especially after the debacle the grand old party faced in the Rajya Sabha election, and the internal bickering which followed. Arvind Kejriwal's AAP won one seat. It will be interesting to find out what exactly the reasons behind the victory of the AAP in one particular seat were. The same would be worth examining in the case of the AJP winning one single seat, especially when Congress has drawn a blank. The Asom Gana Parishad meanwhile has several reasons to rejoice. While the regional party was allotted only seven seats by the BJP, it however managed to win six, thus registering a very remarkable performance. One must keep in mind that Guwahati was once upon a time the strongest bastion of the AGP. While the regional party continues to hold the Guwahati West Assembly constituency, the BJP legislator in the Dispur constituency had largely won in 2021 by virtue of his AGP support base. Yet another aspect that should be put on record in the context of the GMC election is the total abstinence of Akhil Gogoi's Raijor Dal.
