Minimum qualification: Letters to The EDITOR

Minimum qualification

India is the second democratic country of the world. But, it is observed that many candidates, who have been contesting election for Parliament as well as Assemblies of our country, are matriculates or even less educated. At the same time, they are going to take part in complex process of legislation and thereby framing law for the country or a state. They have been in the forefront to work for the welfare of the people with little knowledge. How ridiculous? I would, therefore, like to request all authorities concerned – the Election Commission of India, parliamentarians, intellectuals and others – to ponder over the issue of minimum qualification for contesting election. I think minimum educational qualification should be higher secondary passed, at least, if not graduation or post-graduation.

Putul Sarma,

Biswanath Chariali.

Excellent, Odisha!

The efforts made by the Government and the administration of Odisha in mitigating the loss to human lives caused by the cyclone Fani is laudable, to say the least. Naveen Pattanaik, the Chief Minister of Odisha, and his entire team have done a fantastic job, with support from the public in general. Other States would do well to take a leaf out from Odisha's book, and work towards developing institution(s) that could minimize losses due to disasters, natural or man-made.

This is even more important for a State like Assam, where many lives are lost, especially due to floods, electrocution, etc. Every year, many parts of Assam, for that matter even the capital city of Guwahati, is brought to a standstill because of floods and water-logging.

A great example and benchmark in disaster management has been set by Odisha for other states to emulate.

A Bhuyan,

Nagaon.
