A teacher’s life is plagued by problems

Teachers have been decorated with honorifics like ‘the backbone of the country’. Teachers have also spent their lives for the welfare of the students by establishing schools with the cooperation of the people. Many teachers, caught in the trap of hope, end their careers without pay. But the government does not provincialize all schools. Of the few schools and teachers’ posts that have been provincialized, many have been kept as tutors with very low salaries. Many teachers are unable to take care of their families. Many have been forced to commit suicide. TET teachers and contractual teachers are also in danger of not getting their salaries on time. Many problems have crippled the teaching mentality of the teaching class. Teachers and employees have been forced to go on strike over the problems of the midday meal cooks and teachers. These unfortunates have no choice but to take to the streets to demand their rights. We hope that the education department of the present government will be interested in solving the long-term problems of these teachers and staff. I seek the cooperation and sympathy of the Government in this regard.

Riyan’s omission

Riyan Parag, a regular member of the state Ranji team and Rajasthan Royals, who also happens to be a very exciting young all-rounder, could not impress the national selectors for his selection in the Indian senior team for the ongoing T20 bilateral series against Australia being played in India, in spite of his brilliant performance in the last concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali (SMAT) Interstate T20 tournament. In that tournament, Riyan, who was captaining the state team, scored six consecutive half centuries (which is itself a record) to take his side to the semi-final. Apart from batting, he showed his bowling skills by grabbing important wickets in each match, thereby finishing with 9 wickets in that tournament. Now it will be very interesting to see how ACA reacts. One must and should admit that merely getting a venue for an IPL match, a T20 international, or an ODI and also having someone from the ACA as joint secretary of BCCI will not serve Assam cricket.

We are very sure that ACA will react in this regard.

Disrespect for Verghese

Kurien and National Milk Day

National Milk Day is celebrated every year in India on November 26 to mark the birth anniversary of the father of the White Revolution in India, the legendary Dr. Verghese Kurien. Because of the untiring efforts of Dr. Kurien and his leadership, India achieved self-sufficiency in milk production, and the brand Amul was created. Millions of farmers and their families have benefited just because of the herculean task he initiated in the 1960s.

However, it is dismaying and disheartening to find that, in the last few days, almost the whole of G.S. Road in Guwahati has been lined up with posters of the ministers in the Union and state governments in the name of the ensuing National Milk Day on November 26. There is NOT a single acknowledgement anywhere about Dr. Kurien. This is total disrespect to the memory of the very man on whose birth anniversary National Milk Day is celebrated. Ministers seem to have usurped the very deeds of the great son of India.
