Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma’s recent visit to Singapore holds significant strategic importance for Assam and the Northeast region of India. This visit aimed at fostering economic growth, technological advancement, and urban development in the state. This visit enhances Assam’s international profile and promotes ease of doing business in Assam. With a prime focus on semiconductors and urban planning that aligns with Dr. Sarma’s vision to make Assam a hub for electronics manufacturing and modern urban infrastructure, the visit was strategically timed ahead of the ‘Advantage Assam 2.0 - Investment and Infrastructure Summit 2025’ scheduled for February 25-26 in Guwahati. The key highlights that signify the strategic importance of the visit are:

1. Meeting with the President of Singapore:

CM Dr. Sarma met with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and had discussions on collaborative projects and Assam’s strategic role in the India-Singapore Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. By engaging with key industry leaders and investors in Singapore, Dr. Sarma aimed to showcase Assam’s investment potential and attract international investments in emerging sectors.

This strengthens Assam’s international profile by making it a crucial player in India’s Act East Policy, which aims to enhance economic and strategic relations with Southeast Asia.

2.  Promote Assam as a Technological Hub:

CM Dr. Sarma engaged with industry leaders from Singapore’s semiconductor sector, including representatives from ASMPT, AEM, Besi, and Temasek, who were pivotal in promoting Assam as a key player in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing fields.

He invited these companies to collaborate on the upcoming Electronic City in Jagiroad. This has strategically positioned Assam as an alternative to the established tech hubs for electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, which will potentially create new jobs and boost its economy.

3. Urban Planning and Infrastructure Development:

CM Sarma met with Surbana Jurong, a renowned Singapore-based infrastructure and urban planning firm and had discussions on leveraging Singapore’s world-class urban planning expertise to enhance Assam’s infrastructure development.

This partnership will help modernise cities and industrial parks, thereby improving the ease of living for residents and supporting sustainable urban growth in Assam.

Developed urban infrastructure will make Assam more attractive to investors and further support the ‘Advantage Assam’ initiative.

4. Boosting Advantage Assam 2.0:

The visit strategically promotes the ‘Advantage Assam 2.0’ initiative and showcases Assam as a key investment destination in Northeast India.

By engaging international investors and leveraging Singapore’s advanced urban planning and technological expertise, Assam is aiming to accelerate its economic growth and infrastructure development.

5. Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship Award to CM Dr. Sarma:

CM Dr. Sarma was honoured with Singapore’s prestigious Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship. The award recognises his leadership and contributions to public service.

This recognition enhances his international standing and positions Assam as a progressive state under the visionary leadership of HCM Dr. Sarma.
