Guwahati, the premier city of the Northeastern region, is fast emerging as an unsafe place for both vehicle-owners and pedestrians. A compilation of statistics made by the Guwahati City Police has revealed that as many as 63 persons had lost their lives in road accidents here in the first three months of the current year. This means, 21 persons have been killed every month. The deaths apart, at least 207 persons were reported injured in the road accidents which totalled 239 from January to March 2019. This also means that as many as 79 accidents have taken place on an average in Guwahati city during the first three months of the current year. Whether or not the Police have found out or analysed the reasons behind this rising number of road accidents is not immediately known. But then it common knowledge that reckless driving, drunkern drivers, failure of the police to impose fines and penalise offenders on the spot, a faulty traffick light system, absence of proper well-designated pedestrian crossing points, dangerously faulty footpaths and pavements, wrong parking etc are some of the most common reasons behind these accidents. While a sizeable number of road accidents take place during the night, one invariable reason could be drunken drivers. While the police occasionally check drivers of small vehicles with the help of breath analysers in order to identify if they are driving under influence of liquor, it is high time the police also carried out such checks on drivers, conductors and handymen of the city buses too. Citizens who use city buses after say 7 PM have often come across drunk conductors and handymen who, in addition to lack of control on their body also indulge in using all kinds of abusive and slang words, much to the discomfort of law-abiding citizens who pay for their travel. The City Police should also take steps to help pedestrians, especially the elderly and differently-abled in crossing roads and boarding and alighting from city buses. Students from high schools and colleges, as well as cadets of the NCC and Scouts & Guides can be involved as volunteers to help the citizens. This in turn will help create a generation of responsible citizens of the future too.
