BENGALURU: The trend of renting partners, including boyfriends and girlfriends, has been gaining traction in several countries such as China, Japan, and Thailand.

This growing phenomenon is now making its way to India, where several new apps and websites have surfaced to offer these services. The trend typically peaks during Valentine’s Week, as people look for temporary companions for events or social gatherings.

In Bengaluru, posters advertising a “Rent A Boyfriend” service have grabbed public attention. The posters, seen around areas like Jayanagar, Banashankari, and BDA complexes, offer the service for Rs. 389 per day.

The posters feature a scannable code with the tagline “This Valentine’s Day, Rent A Boyfriend, Scan Me,” attracting people who might need a companion for social events or simply wish to have a partner for a day.

The appearance of these posters has sparked outrage among some residents of Bengaluru, who have taken to social media to express concerns and demand action from the Bengaluru Police. They argue that the service threatens the city’s cultural values.

However, this isn’t the first instance of such services in India. In 2018, an app called ‘Rent A Boyfriend’ was launched in Mumbai, offering men for rent based on certain physical criteria. Similar services began to appear in Bengaluru in 2022 and have since spread to other major cities in India, drawing both interest and criticism.
