Sentinel Digital Desk

Periods can be a difficult time for every woman who is already handling so much. There is work or college or school, home, children, and on top of it a body that is too difficult to understand because apart from the pain and the cramps, and the mood swings, the body craves random foods that may be extremely unhealthy in the long-run and also cause someone to cheat on their diet a little too much.

Comfort food is important on a period but so is keeping a check on what is being eaten so that you don't go overboard with the whole "calories on your period don't count". Here are a few comfort foods that can be eaten by women on their period, which will soothe those cramps, fulfil the cravings and also make sure that the weight loss and diet goals are not messed with.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is one of the best things to eat in a period. It gives the best of both worlds- it satisfies the cravings of chocolate which most women tend to have on their period and is extremely healthy. It contains antioxidants, iron, magnesium, and fibre which are essential nutrients for the body when its menstruating, and also otherwise.

Ginger

In a research study, 150 women were instructed to take 1 g of ginger powder a day, for the first three days of their period. The results were that ginger reduced pain almost as effectively as an anti-inflammatory painkiller. Sipping on ginger tea on initial days of a period can really help soothe the cramps and help in retaining energy in the body.

Yogurt

Yogurt can be a great option for comfort food during a period when a craving for sugar arises. Yogurt has less sugar than any other desserts and is full of calcium that helps in soothing menstrual cramps. A study also found that a diet with calcium-rich dairy products reduces PMS by 40%. Yogurt also contains friendly good bacteria that help in digestion and prevent bloating during the period.

Dry fruits

Dry fruits, nuts, seeds are said to be rich in Vitamin E, which is not only great for the skin but also helps in relieving period cramps and pain, and menstrual migraine. Dry fruits are also a good snacking option for diabetic people or people on a weight loss diet.

Baked fries

For a craving of something salty or tasty, the best option to turn to are baked fries with a little salt. Low salt snacks can help prevent bloating that can arise from consuming too much salt due to a craving. Though fries can also be fried in healthy oil, baking them is a better option for a weight loss diet.
