KATHMANDU: An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 on the Richter scale struck Nepal in the early morning of February 28, less than 24 hours after Assam was hit by a 5.3 magnitude earthquake, triggering panic among people. The tremors were felt in parts of India, including in Siliguri and Patna.
The earthquake was felt at around 2.36 am in Nepal's Bagmati Province, about 189 km north of Muzaffarpur in Bihar. However, the epicenter was pin-pointed to Sindhupalchowk District in the Central Region of the Himalayan nation.
The US Geological Survey recorded the quake at magnitude 5.5. No reports of damage to property, human casualties, or injuries have been reported, but the tremor led to panic among people who were in their deep sleep when it shook violently. "It shook us from our sleep. The tremors were forceful. Many people ran out of their homes in panic," a resident of Kathmandu said.
The tremors were not confined to Nepal. Residents in bordering regions of India and Tibet also reported feeling the jolt. While no immediate casualties or major structural damage have been reported, local authorities continue to assess the situation. Social media posts showed buildings and ceiling fans shaking in Patna, Sikkim, and Darjeeling.
