Six malnourished and intertwined dead giraffes lie in a spiral on the dry earth. The aerial snapshot by photojournalist Ed Ram depicts the destruction caused by Kenya's drought, which has left people and animals in need of food and water.
As the photo depicts, the animals, who were already feeble, died after being caught in the muck. They were attempting to reach a neighbouring reservoir, which had nearly dried up,
To avoid contaminating the reservoir water, the corpses were relocated to the outskirts of Eyrib hamlet in Wajir County.
Animals aren't the only ones in danger. In September, the country's drought management administration warned that 2.1 million Kenyans were on the verge of hunger due to severe drought affecting half of the country.
The United Nations announced on Tuesday that 2.9 million people are still in desperate need of humanitarian assistance. It added that some parts of Kenya had lately had their worst rainfall in decades.
"Water sources for people and cattle have dried up, forcing families to trek longer distances and causing tensions among communities, resulting in an upsurge in intercommoned conflict", according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
Separately, the local Star news website said that the drought was threatening the extinction of 4,000 giraffes.
The issue has gotten worse, according to Ibrahim Ali of the Bour-Algi giraffe sanctuary, because farming along rivers had barred wildlife from water areas.
