STOCKHOLM: Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been honored with the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize for the year 2023. The Nobel Prize Committee recognized her exceptional efforts in combating the oppression of women in Iran and her tireless advocacy for human rights and freedom for all.
Narges Mohammadi's journey for justice and equality has come at an immense personal cost. She has been arrested an astounding 13 times, faced five convictions, and received a cumulative sentence of 31 years in prison along with 154 lashes. Currently incarcerated in Evin Prison in Tehran, as reported by the Front Line Defenders rights organization, she continues to face charges of "spreading propaganda" against the Iranian regime.
Mohammadi holds the position of deputy head at the Defenders of Human Rights Centre, a non-governmental organization led by Shirin Ebadi, the 2003 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
