SAN FRANCISCO: Perplexity has launched a new "Deep Research" tool, competing with OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. This tool gathers information from hundreds of sources and provides detailed reports on advanced topics like finance, marketing, and technology.

Users can access the Deep Research feature by visiting perplexity.ai, selecting "Deep Research" from the chat box drop-down menu, and entering their query. Within 2-4 minutes, the AI reviews sources, refines its research plan, and delivers a detailed report. The report can be downloaded as a PDF/document or shared as a Perplexity page.

According to a blog post by Perplexity, the Deep Research tool outperforms many rivals on Humanity’s Last Exam—a benchmark for AI reasoning abilities. OpenAI’s Deep Research leads with a 26.6% accuracy rate, followed by Perplexity. Other competitors, including DeepSeek R1 (8.6%), Gemini (7.2%), and Grok-2 (3.9%), trail behind.

At launch, Perplexity's Deep Research tool is free for all logged-in web users and will soon roll out on iOS, Android, and Mac. However, only Perplexity Pro subscribers will have access to unlimited queries, while free users will face daily limits.

Perplexity's pricing is more affordable than its competitors. Google's Gemini costs $19.99 per month (Rs.1,737.04) under the Google One AI plan, while OpenAI's Deep Research tool is available through ChatGPT Pro for $200 per month (Rs.17,375.91). OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently said they plan to offer advanced features to free users later this year.
