Guwahati: The United States sent a strong message to Pakistan and stressed on the need to support the efforts of the United Nations, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghanistan. It asserts that a term of 40 years is enough for a responsible nation to get on board with the south Asia peace process.
US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, in his message, states, "We're looking for every responsible nation to support peace in the sub-continent and across this war in Afghanistan that's gone on now for 40 years." While welcoming the Union Defence Minister of India Nirmala Sitharaman for talks, Mattis said this to the media at the Pentagon on Monday.
He further added that this is now time that everyone should get on board for showing their support to the United Nations, Prime Minister Modi, (Afghan) President (Ashraf) Ghani and every other person who is trying to maintain peace and make for a better world. He added that we are on that track. It should be diplomatically led and rest, they will do their best to protect the Afghan people.
The US defense secretary, while responding to a question put up by media regarding the letter written by President Donald Trump to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan says that the President sought Pakistan PM’s support in the peace process in Afghanistan. The US president has clearly mentioned that Pakistan's support in this regard "is fundamental" in order to build an enduring US-Pakistan partnership.
