Vaastu Rules for the Dining Room

It is best to have the dining area in the West. The North or East are considered the second best directions.

Sentinel Digital Desk

The dining room should always be spacious, hospitable and comfortable. In other words, it should be cosy and inviting. While dining, the head of the family must face the East. The rest of the family members can face East, North or West.

The children should not sit in the Southwest corner of the dining table. If they sit in this direction they shall end up acquiring control over the house (over their parents and not without unpleasant altercations).

No one from the family should face the South while dining. Doing this causes small disputes among family members.

The East, North or West walls are ideal for installing doors in the dining area. Avoid doors in the South.

Square or rectangular dining tables are the best. Do not have circular, oval or any other shaped dining tables.

Place the dining table towards the Southwest corner of the dining area without touching the wall. Keep enough space between the dining chairs and wall so that people can get up easily.

The dining table must not fold against any wall.

Do not place a dining table under a beam.

Use the Northeast part of the dining area to keep drinking water.

Provide a wash-basin in the North or East but not in the South-East or North-West.

Do not attach any toilets next to the dining area.

The main door of the house and the entrance door of the dining room should not face each other.

Keep the kitchen and the dining area on the same floor.

The refrigerator can be kept in the South-East corner of the dining area.

If the dining section is a part of the drawing-room i.e. drawing-cum-dining area, then use a curtain or a plotted plant as a separator.

Pink, orange, yellow, cream or off-white are the best colours for the dining room

It is good to have a mirror in the East or North wall of the dining area.

Besides these rules, there are some tips, which can promote the energy of the dining area and make it an enjoyable place for the family members. They are:-

1. Place posters or photos of appetizing/delicious dishes in the dining area to arouse hunger.

2. A family, while eating, should always be relaxed, happy and stress free.

3. Family members must speak politely to each other while eating. Table manners must be taught to the children. They should converse respectfully at all times.

4. Family members should not criticize or poke fun of each other while eating at the dining table. The negative energy generated will get into the food and body.

5. Elders too should refrain from giving sermons and advice to juniors on the dining table as consequently the juniors might lose interest in eating food.

6. It is very good to play soft and subdued music in the dining room.

7. Avoid keeping the TV in the dining room as it is bound to cause distractions.

Vaastu Tips for Kitchen or Store Room:

The different rooms in the house are designed for different purposes. They have their own uses. In some houses, there is a separate store room for keeping things while in many houses; a room is converted to a store by keeping things. We tend to keep several items in the store room, which are not commonly used on regular basis. This is where vaastu defects may arise. It is a bad habit to keep things, which we do not use. Old or useless items are breeding grounds for Rahu & Ketu in the form of negative energy.

Do not keep these items:

Useless items should be immediately disposed. Sometimes, old toys or sports goods, tricycles etc of children are kept for sentimental value. This is wrong. They should be disposed or donated to needy children.

About keeping kitchen items in the store room:

Utensils and cutlery should not be kept in the store for a long time. Specially, brass utensils should not be kept in the store. Sewing machines and old stoves or cookware should not be kept in the store.

Moreover, rusted items should not be kept in the store along with sharp objects like knives or cutters. Items of daily use in the kitchen are also forbidden in the store. They are best kept in the kitchen itself.

Vaastu tips for confidence building:

We come across a lot of people who are academically very sharp and knowledgeable but are not successful in life. This is due to lack of confidence. They are pessimistic about their own endeavours and as a result lag behind. Vaastu shastra has suggested several ways by which one can develop confidence and progress in life. After all people with lower self esteem cannot concentrate on their work and their negative attitude in life stops them from achieving their goals.

There are certain things, which can increase confidence, as advocated by vaastu. These are:

1. Keep a picture of the rising sun in the East side of the living room. This inspires a person. Offer water first thing in the morning to the Sun God.

2. Keep a picture of running horses in the Northwest of the living room. This also increases confidence.

3. An aquarium at North, Northeast or East is good for building confidence. Feed the fish regularly and clean the tank from time to time.

4. The Shani Yantra is an excellent tool to get rid of negative thinking. It should be kept in one corner of the house on a Saturday (preferably on the day of the ascending moon) facing the West. Lord Shani is the controller of longevity, misery, sorrow, old age, discipline, restriction, responsibility, delays, ambition, leadership, authority, humility, integrity and wisdom. By keeping a Shani Yantra, all the odds associated with these inevitable facets of life can be tackled.

5. Chant the Gayatri Mantra in the morning. This mantra is supposed to sharpen intellect and calm the mind.

6. Open the windows in the morning. This brings fresh energy into the house.

7. DO NOT sit at your place of work with your back to the window. This can take away energy from you. If it is unavoidable, use heavy curtains on the window and keep it closed as far as possible.

Is it ok to keep a Bonsai plant in my drawing room? I was gifted with an orange Bonsai plant which is now surprisingly bearing fruits.

P. Das, Narengi

Although Bonsai plants are good to look at, Vaastu does not recommend keeping them in the house. Bonsai is a Japanese technique to suppress the growth of a plant and this technique has a negative bearing. Do not keep it. But you can take out the tree and replant it in the garden to allow normal growth.
