3.5 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Gujarat Amid Cyclone Biparjoy Warning

An earthquake struck Kutch on Wednesday evening (June 14), bringing with it the threat of Cyclone Biparjoy.

AHMEDABAD: A 3.5 magnitude earthquake was felt in Gujarat's Kutch on Wednesday, a day before Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall. According to the Gandhinagar Institute of Seismological Research, the epicentre of the earthquake was 5 kilometres west-southwest of Bhachau in the Kutch area. The earthquake occurred at 5:05 p.m. on Wednesday.

The 3.5-magnitude earthquake struck 5 kilometres west-southwest of Bhachau, Kutch.

The centre of the June 14 earthquake was located at a latitude of 23.291 and a longitude of 70.293, with a depth of 18.5 km, according to the Gujarat government's Institute of Seismological Research.

This recent earthquake occurred barely weeks after the last seismic event in Kutch, which occurred in May 2023. The preceding quake, measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale, occurred near the India-Pakistan border in the Khavda district of Kutch.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Cyclone Biparjoy warning for Gujarat's Saurashtra and Kachchh coasts on Wednesday. By the evening of June 15, it is expected to move almost northeastwards and traverse Saurashtra and Kutch, as well as the neighbouring Pakistan beaches between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) near Jakhau Port (Gujarat).

Earlier on Wednesday, the BSF evacuated residents from villages in Kutch's coastal districts at its Border Outpost in the aftermath of the cyclone. Gujarat's Inspector General of Border Security Force, Ravi Gandhi, visited the coastal areas of Bhuj to inspect the mitigation measures being implemented to lessen the damaging impacts of the cyclone and to assess preparedness for any contingency.

The US Geological Survey reported a magnitude 6.2 earthquake in the Philippines on Thursday, with local authorities warning of aftershocks and potential damage.

At roughly 10:00 a.m. (0200 GMT), the earthquake occurred at a depth of 124 kilometres (77 miles) in waters about three hours' drive from Manila.
