NEW DELHI: India expressed its interest to the IOC in hosting the 2036 Summer Olympics by sending a letter of intent. This is India's first attempt to host the world's most prestigious sporting event. The country will bank on its existing sports infrastructure and, at the same time, will be adding new facilities in different cities.

The envisioned model is based on the usage of several cities for the competition. The cities were chosen in view of their specialist infrastructure. Odisha, known for its hockey prowess, would host most of the hockey matches, and Bhopal has been identified for staging rowing events.

Pune is likely to stage canoeing and kayaking, taking advantage of the city’s existing facilities. The IOC’s approval of multi-city hosting in 2014 has allowed India to consider this model, which would distribute the financial burden more evenly.

Three cities—Delhi, Mumbai, and Ahmedabad—are in discussions for hosting cricket matches, with each city’s stadiums being evaluated for suitability. Ahmedabad's modern sports complex is under consideration for a number of indoor events. The government is also considering it as a possible location for an Athletes' Village that would provide participants with state-of-the-art accommodation and facilities.

India will be competing with nine other countries, including Mexico, Turkey, and Indonesia, when the IOC's Future Host Commission deliberates on hosting the 2036 Games. The host city will be decided after a comprehensive review process.
