On July 12, during a demonstration, she set herself on fire and was brought to AIIMS Bhubaneswar with severe burn injuries.
CM Majhi expressed his profound sadness at the incident on his social media network X, which was formerly Twitter.

“I am deeply saddened to hear the news of the demise of the female student from FM Autonomous College. Despite the government's fulfillment of all responsibilities and the tireless efforts of the expert medical team, the victim's life could not be saved.”

The girl had received intensive treatment after suffering 90% burns. The Chief Minister vowed justice and expressed his sympathies. "I ask Lord Jagannath to give her family the strength to deal with this irreversible loss, and I pray for the eternal serenity of her departed soul. I promise the departed student's family that everyone involved in this case will receive the harshest penalty possible under the law. I have personally instructed the authorities to do this. "The government is fully behind the family," he continued.

The head of the education department was one of the faculty members the student had accused of sexually harassing her and threatening to falsify her grades. She complained several times, but she felt unheard.

Since July 1, a demonstration calling for action had been going on. CCTV captured her tragic act. Burn injuries were also sustained by a male student who attempted to save her.
The associate professor was suspended and detained after public outcry. In addition to being arrested, the college principal was suspended for improperly handling the situation. The principal was suspended due to negligence, according to the Odisha Higher Education Department.
