DARJEELING: BJP MP and National Spokesperson Raju Bista has called for enhanced regional air connectivity to promote tourism and aid local communities in Darjeeling and Kalimpong.
During a meeting with Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, Bista discussed the ongoing expansion of Bagdogra Airport and proposed the launch of daily helicopter services connecting Bagdogra, Darjeeling, Mirik, Bijanbari, and Kalimpong.
Highlighting the region’s importance as a major Eastern Himalayan tourist hub, Bista stressed the economic and social benefits of improved air connectivity. He noted that daily helicopter services would not only attract high-value tourists but also facilitate emergency transportation for local residents.
The Civil Aviation Minister assured Bista that the proposal would be prioritized, with instructions already issued to assess its feasibility and implementation.
Reaffirming his commitment to regional development, Bista expressed optimism about the initiative’s impact. “I look forward to these projects materializing and bringing prosperity to Darjeeling, Terai, and Dooars,” he stated.
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha MP Dorjee Tshering Lepcha of Sikkim has appealed to the Union Government to accord the highest priority to the extension of the railway network from Rangpo to Nathula, as it is going to play a crucial role in ensuring all-weather connectivity, boosting tourism, and enhancing military logistics.
