Guwahati: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to cancel the remaining exams for 10th and 12th board exams that were due to be held in July.
At the same time, Centre has said that Class 12 students will have the option of appearing for exams if they wish, but if not, their earlier examination marks will be evaluated instead.
The CBSE has shared its decision to cancel the pending Class 12 and 10 board examinations in a reply to the Supreme Court Supreme Court bench led by J AM Khanwilkar that heard the plea seeking cancellation of the remaining CBSE exams due to the pandemic. Speaking in the apex court, the SG said, "Our affidavit filed half an hour back states that taking into account suggestion from States, exam for Class 10 and 12 from July 1 stands cancelled."
Meanwhile, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE) Board has also stated that it would follow the decision taken by the CBSE. SC Tushar Mehta appeared for CBSE and HRD Ministry in front of the Supreme Court. Advocate Rishi Malhotra for the petitioner shared that Maharashtra, Odisha and Delhi have expressed their inability to conduct exams due to the pandemic.
It needs mention here that only a few papers of the CBSE 10th and 12th board exams were left when schools were closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Although the board released the date sheets for the exams in May, parents opposed the move, claiming that it endangers the lives of students.
Few papers of CBSE 10th, 12th Board Exams 2020 were left when the schools and colleges were closed. Exams from March 19 to March 31 were deferred till April, and then postponed by the HRD Ministry as a nationwide lockdown was announced on March 25. These exams were then deferred and scheduled to be conducted between July 1 and July 15.
CBSE had shared its intent to cancel the exams abroad and to conduct exams for only 29 subjects out of the remaining lot. The board released the date sheet for the exams in May.
Parents, however, quickly opposed the move, with the number of cases of the Covid-19 continuing to rise at a dramatic pace. Earlier, the Supreme Court had asked CBSE to announce its final stand on holding of the pending examinations while addressing a petition filed by parents.
