Burari Mass Suicide: Local Claims of Ghostly Presence in the House

Sentinel Digital Desk

A spooky urban legend was sure to rise around the house in Burari, New Delhi which created sensation following the bizarre drama of the entire Bhatia-Chundawat family killing themselves for days in July this year. There was intense speculation if the 11 pipes which were protruding from the walls of the building had any significance with the 11 suicides that took place in that particular house.

As the mystery continues over the entire issue, now, the locals of the Burari's Sant Nagar locality claims that there is some ghostly presence in that cursed building which daunts anyone in the locality from venturing close to the two-story structure after dark. Though the inquisition of the people in the city often leads them to the house and peep inside, maybe in hope to experience some thrilling outwardly experience, the entire lane seems mostly deserted by late evening and even children shy away from playing in that narrow lane on which the house stands

Karampal, a local next door and whose family runs a shop in the locality says reveals that their shops do not witness any gathering after dark and even the local youth who use to sit on the steps of their shops are nowhere to be seen. “After dark, we even keep away from our rooms that open onto the balcony of the dreaded house”, Karampal, further said.

A little too much might have gone into investigating regarding the entire story of the haunted house. A month later of the mysterious incident, the court had handed over the keys of the building to Dinesh Chundawat, the only brother to have escaped the incident. He stayed with his family in the house with his family and no ill effects were witnessed by the family. Dinesh even removed the 11 mysterious pipes ascribed with occult symbolism at the time when bodies were discovered. According to Amarjeet Singh, a local of the area, who runs a shop opposite to the Burari Building, “Dinesh often keeps visiting the house to complete the renovation work of the house which his now deceased brother Lalit had stated”.

It was learned that Dinesh had performed a havan (prayer) at the house and kept the gates locked. However, many locals in the area like to believe that spreading of such rumours might be the handiwork of some local land mafia to shy off any potential buyers and keep the building in their control. On the other hand, Pawan Kumar, who is into the real estate business claims that even before the incident when the house was tried to be sold, it could not be sold and now after the incident, the house will be hard to be sold off for a long time. It will be just a place of local attraction, he added.
