MUMBAI: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has found himself embroiled in a fresh controversy following his latest performance, where he aimed a satirical dig at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
The unexpected turn of events unraveled during a show at 'The Habitat Comedy Club' located in Mumbai's Khar area where Kamra performed a parody of the popular Bollywood song "Bholi Si Surat" from Dil To Pagal Hai, twisting the lyrics to call Shinde a "Gaddar" (traitor).
Kamra's satirical remarks was made in reference to Eknath Shinde's rebellion against Uddhav Thackeray in 2022 which eventually led to the split of Shiv Sena into two warring factions and the collapse of the then MVA (Maha Vikash Aghadi) government comprising of the Congress party, undivided Shiv Sena and undivided NCP.
He also cracked a joke about the political situation in Maharashtra, saying, "Shiv Sena first came out of the BJP, then Shiv Sena came out of Shiv Sena. NCP came out of NCP, they gave nine buttons to one voter...everyone got confused."
His fiery comments were met with massive backlash from Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena faction after the clip of Kamra's performance went viral.
The situation escalated so much so that a group of Shiv Sena workers vandalized Hotel Unicontinental in Khar yesterday where the show was held.
Responding to the horrific ordeal, The Habitat Comedy Club, which operates from the hotel, announced a temporary shutdown, citing safety concerns.
Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel and Yuva Sena leader Rahul Kanal filed complaints against Kunal Kamra, prompting the Mumbai Police to register an FIR against the comedian.
