NEW DELHI: Dense fog and poor visibility in New Delhi disrupted train services on Christmas morning, delaying 20 trains departing from the national capital. Among the affected were key services such as the Mumbai Central Rajdhani Express, Dakshin Express, and Duronto Express.
The persistent cold temperatures and limited visibility further compounded the issues. Other delayed trains included the Durg-Hazrat Nizamuddin Express from Durg to Delhi and the Jabalpur-Hazrat Nizamuddin Gondwana Express from Jabalpur to Delhi, along with several others.
The Indian Meteorological Department reported that New Delhi recorded a temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, with visibility reduced to just 100 meters due to dense fog at 5:30 am. Residents used bonfires to cope with the cold, which intensified following rainfall the previous day.
Locals highlighted the challenges posed by the weather, noting the significant drop in temperature and poor visibility caused by the fog. Additionally, the city's air quality index (AQI) was measured at 333 by the Central Pollution Control Board at 8 am, placing it in the 'very poor' category.
Air quality in various parts of New Delhi remained in the 'very poor' category, with AQI levels recorded at 360 in Anand Vihar, 372 in Ashok Vihar, 362 in Bayana, and 324 at CRRI Mathura Road. According to the AQI scale, levels between 301 and 400 indicate very poor air quality, while levels above 400 are classified as severe.
Residents expressed concerns about the dual impact of winter and pollution, which have become increasingly severe. Many reported health issues such as breathing difficulties due to the poor air quality.
Others urged the government to implement long-term solutions to address the city's persistent pollution problems, noting a slight reduction in pollution following recent rainfall.
