NEW DELHI: The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) faced a significant technical disruption that rendered both its website and mobile application inaccessible to users on Thursday. The outage, which was linked to ongoing maintenance work, caused widespread inconvenience, particularly for passengers trying to book tickets.
Many users were unable to complete their booking processes or access essential services, which affected their travel plans, especially during the busy holiday season.
A notice on the IRCTC platform confirmed the service interruption, stating that e-ticketing services were unavailable due to maintenance. Reports from Downdetector, a platform that tracks service outages, showed that over 2,500 users had lodged complaints about being unable to use the service.
This outage came at a particularly challenging time, with many passengers attempting to book Tatkal tickets, further worsening the disruptions. IRCTC, which serves millions of passengers daily for ticket bookings and management, has now faced two significant disruptions in December, raising concerns about the platform's dependability.
In response to the issue, IRCTC provided alternative methods for passengers needing to cancel tickets, offering customer support through phone and email for generating Ticket Deposit Receipts (TDR).
The ongoing reliance on IRCTC for train bookings underscores the need for a more reliable technical infrastructure, particularly during busy travel periods.
Passengers affected by the outage can reach out to customer care for assistance at the following phone numbers: 14646, 08044647999, or 08035734999. Alternatively, they can email their ticket details to etickets@irctc.co.in to request the generation of a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR).
