RANCHI: Leading figures from the INDIA Opposition bloc attended the swearing-in ceremony today at Ranchi's Moradabad Ground, where Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader Hemant Soren took the oath of office as Chief Minister, just days after the INDIA bloc won a landslide victory in the Assembly polls.

Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Congress Party, Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of Samajwadi Party, Arvind Kejriwal and Tejashwi Yadav were among the distinguished dignitaries.

Due to ongoing negotiations among Mahagathbandhan allies over cabinet berths, Hemant Soren was the only one to take oath today.

The JMM-led alliance won 56 seats in the 81-member House, the Hemant Soren-led party, which ran for 41 seats, won 34, the Congress won 16 of 30 seats, and RJD and CPIML won six and four seats, respectively, according to the state polls, the results of which were announced on Saturday.

Before becoming an MLA in 2009, 49-year-old Hemant Soren began his political career with a brief term in the Rajya Sabha. From 2010 to 2013, while JMM was in a coalition with the BJP and Arjun Munda was the chief minister, he held the position of deputy chief minister.

After the JMM allied with the Congress and RJD, he was appointed Chief Minister later in 2013. The BJP won the 2014 state election, and Mr. Soren assumed the role of Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly. The JMM-Congress alliance won the 2019 Assembly election, and Mr. Soren began his second term as Chief Minister.
