SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police announced the death of a Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant who was involved in the killing of seven workers from a construction firm building the Z-Morh tunnel near Sonamarg. The militant, identified as Junaid Ramzan Bhat from Kulgam in south Kashmir, was named after police recognized him in CCTV footage from the October 20 attack.
Bhat was killed during a gunfight in the Dachigam forests, located on the outskirts of Srinagar. Following intelligence reports, a joint team of police and security forces cordoned off the area on Monday evening. As the forces were conducting a search, they came under fire, triggering a firefight in which Bhat was killed. Authorities later identified him as the attacker.
“In the ongoing operation, one terrorist is killed and has been identified as Junaid Ahmed Bhat (LeT, Category A). The said terrorist was involved in civilian killing at Gagangir, Ganderbal, and several other terror attacks,” the J&K Police posted on X. “Operation continues in the upper reaches of Dachigam by J&K Police along with joint parties of RR and security forces. Further details shall follow.”
The October 20 attack targeted workers from APCO Infratech on the Srinagar-Sonamarg highway, marking the first militant assault on a major infrastructure project in the region, which resulted in the deaths of seven people.
