Madhya Pradesh: Crisis deepens in MP Congress government as Jyotirditya Scindia, along with 20 Congress MLAs resign the party.
In a major setback for the Congress and its government in Madhya Pradesh, Jyotiraditya Scindia, a former close confident of the Gandhi family and deputy of Chief Minister Kamal Nath, on Tuesday, has, along with 20 Congress MLAs of the state reportedly, resigned the grand old party. They are going to join the BJP soon, sources revealed. This development has come after the senior Congress leader openly criticised the party national leadership for its debacle in recently concluded Delhi assembly elections.
Party sources revealed that Sindia, son of former Union minister and influential Congress leader late Madhav Rao Sindia, has the support of at least 25 to 26 Congress MLAs of the state. On Monday some loyalists of Scindia were flown to BJP-ruled Karnataka. Since then they switched off their mobile phones increasing speculation. Resting the speculation earlier today the former Union Minister met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Delhi. BJP sources revealed that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan have played a prime role in creating instability in the one-and-half-year old Kamal Nath government. Elections to two Rajya Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh are scheduled to be held in this month and the BJP national leadership has planned to win in both the seats. According to sources of the state Raj Bhawan, at least 25 Congress MLAs will soon defect to the BJP. Among them 20MLAs today resigned the party and the rest will follow the path soon, sources claimed.
The Congress party insiders believed that Scindia, a four-time MP, become disgruntled after the party leadership had chosen Kamal Nath as the Chief Minister of the middle Indian state which went to poll in 2019. Since then he had openly expressed displeasure over the works of the chief minister. The Nath government had enjoyed support from a total of 120 MLAs where the majority mark is 116.
