NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar, in a recent Parliament statement, cleared doubts regarding the three-language formula offered in the National Education Policy (NEP).

He ensured that the selection of languages for school-going children will be up to states, regions, and students themselves, without mandating any language from the central government.

The three-language policy has been controversial, especially in Tamil Nadu, as officials accused the Centre of seeking to impose Hindi. But Majumdar dismissed these claims with firmness, saying that the NEP only seeks to allow flexibility in languages.

He clarified that at least two of the three languages would have to be indigenous to India, so the linguistic diversity of the country will be maintained.

Majumdar also clarified that the NEP 2020 is committed to the promotion of multilingualism and national unity keeping in mind the aspirations of various regions.

The policy also provides provisions for high-quality books in students' mother language as well as urges the teachers to take a bilingual mode of instruction.
