NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha witnessed a heated debate on Friday following allegations made by Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar that cash had been recovered from Congress MP Abhishek Manu Singhvi's seat.

During the proceedings of the House, the vice-president said that the security personnel of the Parliament found a wad of currency notes during the routine checking. He confirmed further that an investigation would be held as per legal protocols.

The announcement caused an immediate furore from the Congress MPs, with the Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge urging the House not to name people before an official probe. Singhvi rejected the allegations very strongly. He explained that he had carried a Rs 500 note to Parliament and spent the afternoon in the canteen after the adjournment.

Singhvi expressed his support for a thorough investigation, suggesting that MPs' seats should be lockable with keys to prevent such incidents in the future. Despite the denial, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and BJP President JP Nadda supported Dhankhar's statement, urging the need for a proper investigation into the matter, which Nadda termed a "serious attack on the dignity of the House."

The incident has intensified tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition, with both sides calling for a thorough and unbiased investigation, leaving the matter unresolved and under scrutiny.
