The husband of a 29-year-old lady who allegedly committed suicide in Sector 20 of Panchkula was released by a local court due to "unclear reasons by police for his initial arrest," but the district police have now taken him back into custody for additional investigation.
Five days after being released by the court, the accused had been evading capture.
On July 14, the woman was discovered hanging at her in-laws' house. Her family, who live in Faridkot, Punjab, said that even though she had complied with their expectations at the time of marriage, she had been subjected to psychological and physical abuse by her husband and his family in order to obtain the dowry.
The accused, a Moga native who now resides in Suncity, Sector 20, was initially taken into custody on July 15 but was later freed by the court that same day for "unclear reasons." Then he disappeared.
After being tracked down and rearrested on Monday, he was presented before the court again, where police secured a two-day remand. Sections 61, 80, 85, 115, and 316(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita are the charges against him.
The accused will undergo a thorough interrogation, according to Srishti Gupta, deputy commissioner of police. She said they were looking through his contacts, digital records, and phone and identify any additional suspects, police said.
