The 17-year-old teenager who is accused of driving a Porsche while intoxicated and mowing down two people in Pune last year will face juvenile charges, the Juvenile Justice Board announced on Tuesday. On May 19 of last year, two IT professionals, Anish Awadhiya and his buddy Ashwini Costa, were killed in an incident that made national news and happened in the Kalyani Nagar area.
Last year, the Pune police requested that the accused be tried as an adult, claiming that he had committed a "heinous" conduct that included attempts to tamper with the evidence in addition to the crushing of two people to death.
According to the defense attorney, the Juvenile Justice Board denied the police's request on Tuesday to treat the accused youngster as an adult. Hours after the May 19 collision last year, the accused youngster was granted bail. Three days later, the kid was sent to an observation home in Pune city after the mild bail conditions, which included requiring him to write a 300-word essay on traffic safety, caused a national uproar.
The Bombay High Court had granted the boy's immediate release on June 25, 2024, stating that the Juvenile Justice Board's decisions to send him to an observation home were unlawful and that the juvenile law needed to be completely enforced.
