GUJRAT: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced that in the next three years, Deendayal Port in Kutch, Gujarat, would emerge as a mega port and handle cargo to the tune of 300 million tonnes annually. While speaking to the gathering at the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, Sonowal presented his vision of augmenting the port's infrastructure and increasing more employment opportunities for the local population.
Sonowal emphasized the port's current status as India's top cargo-handling port and revealed plans to expand its facilities further. "Kandla Port is set to establish itself as a mega port within three years, creating significant economic benefits," he said. A new mega port will be built beyond the creek in Kandla, and DPA is working on establishing a shipbuilding cluster.
The minister laid the foundation stones of two Centres of Excellence, focusing on green hydrogen and green maritime fuels, for the port. Besides this, Sonowal inaugurated a few development projects like harbour mobile cranes, waste recycling plant for Gandhidham, and a Kendriya Vidyalaya school building.
A high-level business-to-business meeting on green hydrogen also was held during the visit. It is meant to encourage more conversation on cooperation, technology, and funding for the green energy industry. All of these changes are in line with India's broader plan to modernize its ports and embrace renewable energy.
