Vaikuntha Chaturdashi 2021:

On this day it honours Harry (Lord Vishnu) and Haru (Lord Shiva). So the devotees perform the Sri Vishnu and Mahadev pujas at Nishita Kaala (midnight) and Arunodaya (sunrise).otherwise Shiva and Vishnu very rarely worship together on the same day. It is observed by most of the temples in Varanasi and it happens one day before another important rite of Dev Diwali. It is also celebrated at Rishikesh, Gaya, and many more Maharashtra cities in addition.

In context with Shiva Purana, Lord Vishnu walked to Varanasi to worship Lord Shiva on the auspicious day of Karthik Chaturdashi and he promised to worship Shiva with one thousand lotuses if he was given the opportunity. Lord Vishnu discovered that the last lotus is missing from the thousands but then he himself plucked one of his eyes and offered it to Lord Shiva as his eyes were always compared as similar to lotus and finally Shiva completed his puja and was moved by the Lord Vishnu's devotion that he has not only restored Lord Vishnu's plucked eye but also gave his own Sudarshana Chakra, which became of the powerful and sacred weapons. Devotees offer thousands of lotuses and simultaneously recite Vishnu Sahasranama.

Lord Vishnu is accorded a particular seat of honour in the shrine of Kashi Vishwanath Temple, a major temple in Varanasi; it is also believed that both on the same day become as devout as Vaikhunta. Both deities are ritually worshipped in the same way but at different timings. Lord Vishnu offer tulsi leaves and in return, Shiva offers wood apple (Bael) leaves to Lord Vishnu.
